ANSA clarified that the tower was under restoration at the time of the incident. The work involved strengthening the foundation and restoring the facade, but the cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. Investigators are considering possible construction errors or structural weakening caused by vibrations from traffic and recent rainfall.

The Conti Tower, also known as Torre dei Conti, was built in 1238 and long remained one of the symbols of medieval Rome. After the 1348 earthquake, it lost its upper levels but retained its architectural value and was considered an important tourist attraction.
