Boeing Planes Returning from China to the U.S. Amid Tariff War
A second Boeing aircraft, originally destined for a Chinese airline, has been redirected back to the United States. According to flight tracking data, this move marks another consequence of the intensifying trade conflict between Washington and Beijing.
Xiamen Airlines confirmed that two planes registered to the carrier flew back to the U.S., though official reasons were not disclosed. However, given the new tariffs, the actions appear logical.
This month, U.S. President Donald Trump raised base tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, prompting China to impose 125% tariffs on American goods. These measures severely impact aviation: the cost of a new Boeing 737 MAX is estimated at $55 million, making tariffs a critical factor for deliveries.
Boeing is already negotiating to resell the returned planes. Potential buyers include Malaysia Airlines, which has expressed interest if Chinese carriers fully cancel their new orders.
The situation adds uncertainty to Boeing’s recovery plans and its efforts to regain market share in Asia.
