France to Help Palestine Draft Constitution for Future State
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed France’s readiness to assist the Palestinian Authority in drafting a constitution for a future Palestinian state. He made the announcement in Paris following talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. According to Macron, France is committed to supporting efforts aimed at building strong state institutions and strengthening the legal framework of Palestine.
Under the new agreements, a joint Franco-Palestinian committee will be formed to develop the legal and institutional framework of the future state. The committee will include lawyers, international law experts, governance specialists, and representatives from both sides. Its goal is to draft the core principles and provisions that will serve as the foundation of the future constitution.
Macron emphasized that France’s support will include consultations on governance models, electoral law, the judiciary, and human rights protection. The French side will provide technical, expert, and educational assistance, including training personnel to serve in future state institutions.
Mahmoud Abbas thanked the French president for the initiative, noting that drafting a constitution is a vital step toward international recognition of Palestinian statehood. He expressed confidence that France’s involvement would lend additional legitimacy to the process and help build a sustainable legal system based on justice and democracy.
In his remarks, Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to the two-state solution and urged all parties to refrain from actions undermining peace prospects. He stated that the creation of viable Palestinian institutions is essential for long-term regional stability.
The French initiative aligns with the European Union’s broader efforts to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and support governance reforms aimed at improving administrative efficiency. The joint committee is expected to begin work in the coming months and later present a preliminary draft of the constitution for public discussion and expert review.
Diplomatic observers note that France’s participation could enhance its influence in Middle Eastern diplomacy and demonstrate Europe’s determination to play an active role in shaping the region’s future political landscape.
The drafting of a constitution is seen as an important step toward institutional consolidation and establishing a solid foundation for the international recognition of Palestinian statehood.
