Situation in Syria: Protests by Assad's supporters have turned into an armed conflict

Protests by supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad have erupted along the Syrian coast, spreading to Jableh, Tartus, Qardaha, and other cities in the Latakia and Tartus governorates. Initially peaceful demonstrations quickly escalated into armed clashes. Local residents supported the resistance and demanded that the new authorities leave the region.

While the new leadership of the country tried to navigate the situation, the protesters managed to capture a strategically important artillery battery on Mount Nabi Yunus. Additionally, reports indicate that several soldiers of the new regime were captured. These events indicate a high level of organization among the resistance and the risk of further escalation.

In response to these actions, the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" group, which controls the country, launched a military operation to suppress the uprising. Its forces entered the northern and eastern regions of Latakia, took control of the road to Jableh, and began clearing protest hotspots.

Despite these measures, the situation remains extremely unstable. It is unclear how widespread the uprising's support is and what further steps Assad’s supporters will take. The presence of Russian military bases in Latakia and Tartus adds to the tension. Any developments in the conflict in this region could affect the international balance of power and lead to further complications in the situation in Syria.
