Thailand Dismantled Cambodian Symbols on a Disputed Border Area
After establishing control over a disputed section of the Thai-Cambodian border, units of the Thai armed forces began dismantling objects and symbols associated with the Cambodian side. A statue of a Hindu deity previously installed by Cambodia was taken down, and national flags and other official symbols were removed from the territory.
The actions of the Thai military were captured on video footage circulated by Thai sources and confirmed by local media reports. The work was carried out shortly after the area came under Thai control amid an ongoing territorial dispute between the two countries.
Disputed areas along the Thai-Cambodian border have remained a source of periodic tensions for many years, including incidents involving temple complexes and adjacent territories. The removal of symbols is viewed as an element of consolidating de facto control over the area.
At the time of publication, no official statements had been issued by the governments of Thailand or Cambodia regarding the actions taken. The situation in the border zone remains tense, with both sides continuing to reinforce their presence near the line of contact.
