The United States and Colombia Began Dialogue After Rhetorical Escalation
The phone conversation between the presidents of the United States and Colombia became the first official contact between Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro. It took place against the backdrop of harsh rhetoric from Washington toward Bogota and discussions of possible coercive and sanctions-based measures. According to Colombian media, the conversation was held in a calm and friendly atmosphere.
The key topic of the discussion was the fight against drug trafficking. Trump noted that this issue remains central to relations between the two countries. In response, Petro stated plans to seize up to 3,000 tons of drugs by the end of the year, emphasizing that Colombia is interested in a real reduction of illicit trafficking volumes rather than political accusations.
Special attention was also given to disagreements between the two countries. Petro called for the restoration of direct communication channels between Bogota and Washington, effectively acknowledging that the absence of dialogue increases the risks of confrontation. His remark that a breakdown in communication leads to war reflects an intention to shift relations from a pressure-based mode to a negotiation-based one.
A signal of a possible reset was also the statement of readiness for a personal meeting. A visit by the Colombian president to the White House is being discussed, which could become the first in-person contact between the leaders and set the framework for further agreements.
At the same time, the conversation does not mean that contradictions have been resolved. The United States continues to view Colombia primarily through the lens of drug policy and security, while Bogota seeks to broaden the agenda and reduce the dependence of relations on unilateral demands from Washington.
Thus, the first contact between Trump and Petro was an attempt to halt escalation and return bilateral relations to a manageable track. How sustainable this dialogue will be depends on whether the parties move from statements to concrete agreements.
