Comments made by Donald Trump at a press conference in Florida highlighted a contradiction that had long remained outside official statements. His direct assertion of mutual respect between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Benjamin Netanyahu showed that, behind Turkey’s publicly confrontational rhetoric toward Israel, stable political and personal channels of interaction continue to exist.

The statement came at a time when Ankara regularly accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza on the international stage and presents itself as a defender of the Palestinians. However, Trump’s words that there would be no problems between Turkey and Israel point to the preservation of an unspoken balance of interests, despite the harsh public language used by the Turkish leadership.

The broader context makes these remarks particularly revealing. Turkey remains a key regional actor involved in the Syrian settlement, cooperation with the United States, and discussions about Gaza’s future. According to the US assessment, Ankara is participating in talks on a post-war governance plan for the enclave that предусматривает the exclusion of Hamas and the formation of a new administrative structure under external oversight. This runs counter to Erdogan’s public line of unconditional support for Palestinian resistance.

An additional signal concerned Gaza itself. Trump openly stated that he was unconcerned about Israel’s actions and fully supported Netanyahu’s approach to disarming Hamas and establishing a new order of governance in the enclave. Such a position effectively removes humanitarian and legal considerations from US calculations and confirms unconditional support for Israel’s military course.

Against this background, the gap between statements and reality becomes more pronounced. Despite declared ceasefires, the Israeli side continues to violate them, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries among Palestinians, the blockade of crossings, and the effective halt of reconstruction for millions of residents. These realities remained outside the political framing voiced in Florida.

Trump’s remarks make the structure of regional arrangements more visible. Turkey, while publicly delivering sharp criticism of Israel, remains part of negotiation and strategic frameworks shaped by the United States and its allies. This undermines trust in Ankara’s mediating role on the Palestinian issue and underscores that key decisions are made beyond the public arena.

It remains unclear how long Ankara can sustain this dual course. The deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and growing domestic pressure within Turkey increase the risk that the divergence between words and actions will become politically unsustainable. Trump’s statements were among the first to articulate this contradiction so openly, bringing it into the sphere of international debate.
