Netanyahu Initiates Direct Talks with Lebanon
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the government to enter into direct negotiations with Lebanon on the issue of a ceasefire and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Contacts are expected to begin in the coming days.
According to available information, the negotiation process will take place in parallel with ongoing military operations. The Israeli side intends to discuss the terms of a ceasefire and measures for the disarmament of Hezbollah, including its presence in Beirut.
This format, предполагающий dialogue “under fire,” reflects Tel Aviv’s intention to maintain military pressure during diplomatic consultations. Israel proceeds from the view that the military component should accompany political negotiations in order to achieve its stated objectives.
At the same time, publications note that the Lebanese side seeks to conduct negotiations on its own terms. It is indicated that Beirut does not automatically consider previous agreements reached with Iranian mediation as a final basis for settlement.
The situation remains tense. The start of direct dialogue may create conditions for reducing the intensity of the conflict, however ongoing hostilities increase the risks of escalation and complicate the achievement of a sustainable agreement.
