Armenian Prime Minister announces progress in dialogue with Ankara
During his visit to the United States, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that relations between Armenia and Turkey have reached an unprecedented level.
What Has Changed?
Speaking at the Atlantic Council, Pashinyan emphasized:
- In recent years, he has met with Turkish President Erdoğan multiple times.
- Foreign ministers are in constant communication.
- A specific agreement has been reached to open the border for third-country citizens and diplomatic passport holders.
“I believe Armenia and Turkey have never had such an active dialogue as we do now,” Pashinyan stated.
A History of Conflict and Normalization
- 1991 – Diplomatic relations were severed.
- 1993 – Turkey closed the border due to the First Karabakh War.
- 2021 – Special envoys were appointed for normalization.
- 2022 – Foreign ministers agreed to advance talks without preconditions.
- 2023 – Direct flights were restored.
- 2024 – Pashinyan and Erdoğan expressed commitment to accelerating normalization.
