Putin Discusses Strikes on Iran with Iranian FM Aragchi
Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi. During the meeting, both parties addressed the current situation in the Middle East, focusing on the recent strikes on Iranian territory. According to the Russian leader, the attacks represent unprovoked aggression and are unjustifiable under international law.
Putin emphasized that Russia is making diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to support the Iranian people amid escalating tensions. He stressed the importance of maintaining regional stability and preventing further conflict escalation. The Russian side called for restraint and advocated for a political solution through dialogue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, in turn, stated that the actions of the US and Israel against Iran are illegitimate. He noted that the escalation in the Middle East is intensifying, particularly due to attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. Aragchi affirmed that Iran has the right to defend itself and will safeguard its security by all available means.
The Iranian representative expressed gratitude for Russia’s stance, stating that Moscow is "on the right side of history" in the confrontation with Israel. Iranian diplomats emphasized the need to establish a new regional balance based on respect for sovereignty and rejection of unilateral military actions. The statement also called on the international community to take a clear position regarding the military strikes.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, including in energy, transport, and security. They also discussed participation in regional integration projects aimed at enhancing economic and political ties. Russian and Iranian officials agreed to continue high-level consultations.
The talks took place amid deteriorating conditions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and renewed international discussions about the consequences of the strikes. Tehran reiterated its intention to defend its interests in accordance with international norms, while Moscow confirmed its readiness to help de-escalate the situation.
