Russian Citizen Detained in Dagestan While Smuggling Diamonds Worth 41 Million Rubles
Customs officers in Dagestan have prevented an attempt to illegally import diamonds from the United Arab Emirates worth 41 million rubles. The Russian Federal Customs Service reported the incident.
A 33-year-old Russian citizen was caught trying to smuggle the diamonds, allegedly intending to resell the precious stones within Russia. To conceal the cargo, he had a secret compartment sewn into his clothing, where the diamonds were discovered.
A criminal case has been opened against the suspect. Depending on the investigation and legal classification, he may face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to one million rubles.
The Federal Customs Service emphasized that the illegal trafficking of precious stones is a serious economic crime that poses a threat to the financial system and national interests. In response, customs authorities have strengthened control along Russia’s southern borders as part of efforts to combat the smuggling of high-value items.
