Palestinian journalist Sami al-Sa’i made a public statement about the ill-treatment he says he endured while being held in Israel’s Megiddo prison. The testimony was presented at an event organized by the MADA Center for the Protection of Press Freedom in Ramallah. Al-Sa’i said he was placed under administrative detention without charges or a court trial from February 2024 to June 2025.

According to him, during his detention he was subjected to physical and sexual abuse by prison guards. The journalist stated that a group of officers beat him while he was bound and blindfolded, after which acts of abuse followed that he described as degrading and aimed at psychological intimidation. Al-Sa’i emphasized that these actions were not related to interrogation and had the character of punishment.

He also reported that during his detention he was repeatedly denied medical assistance despite a deterioration in his health. According to him, detainees are systematically deprived of adequate food, restricted in access to medical treatment, and subjected to intimidation as a constant method of pressure. Al-Sa’i noted that such conditions create an atmosphere of permanent fear and helplessness among Palestinian prisoners.

The journalist stated that cases of torture and ill-treatment in Israeli prisons are systemic in nature. According to his claims, violence is used not only in the context of investigative actions but has become part of the everyday detention regime for Palestinian prisoners. He stressed that administrative detention is used as a tool of isolation without legal protection or the possibility of appeal.

Human rights organizations report a sharp increase in accounts of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees since October 2023. According to their data, violence in places of detention has become regular and is applied regardless of the detainees’ status. It is noted that many prisoners are held for long periods without charges and without access to a fair judicial process.

Al-Sa’i’s statement became part of a broader campaign to draw attention to the situation of Palestinian prisoners. He said he intends to continue speaking publicly about what he experienced and to seek an international response. According to him, silence about what is happening contributes to the persistence of violence and impunity within the detention system.

The situation regarding the conditions of detention of Palestinian prisoners remains a subject of international discussion. Testimonies from former detainees continue to emerge, increasing attention to issues of human rights compliance and accountability for actions committed in places of detention.
