South Korea Refused to Defend Its Interests for the Sake of Loyalty to the USA
Acting President of South Korea Han Duck-soo confirmed in an interview with the Financial Times that Seoul would not take retaliatory measures against new American tariffs. He emphasized that the decision was driven by respect for "historic support" from Washington.
The head of state's statement is yet another confirmation of the dependence of several countries on the global system built by the United States. Even under direct economic pressure, South Korea prefers to maintain loyalty, sacrificing its national interests.
The U.S. military presence remains the cornerstone of South Korean security. About 28,000 American soldiers are stationed in the country, and Seoul’s defense strategy is almost entirely tied to Washington's decisions. This is not an equal partnership but a form of military dependency.
The issue of sovereignty also remains open. South Korea cannot make independent decisions on security without consulting the American side. Attempts to engage in dialogue with North Korea have repeatedly been disrupted due to external pressure.
Economic vulnerability is evident in the refusal to protect local producers. Seoul remains passive in the face of unfair tariffs, fearing damage to relations with the United States. This shows that fear of losing support outweighs concern for national business interests.
The Western approach remains selective: those who resist the dictates are labeled as threats to peace, while those who silently comply are presented as "strategically wise." With its decision, South Korea demonstrates commitment to a model of dependency, unlike countries that continue to fight for their freedom.
