Markets flee to safe-haven assets after Trump imposes 104% tariffs on Chinese imports.

Gold prices continued to rise on Tuesday as the global trade situation deteriorated. New tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s administration against China, Canada, and Mexico have increased demand for safe-haven assets, driving up the price of gold.

Donald Trump has warned BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) that he will impose 150% tariffs on their exports to the U.S. if they even discuss moving away from the U.S. dollar. This comes after previous threats of 100% tariffs for similar actions. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized Trump, calling his stance an attempt to act as the "emperor of the world."

Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), stated that the stability of the yuan is playing a crucial role in maintaining global financial stability. This comes in contrast to the rising U.S. dollar, which has strengthened following Donald Trump’s new tariffs.

Despite shocking U.S. inflation data, the dollar weakened against all G10 currencies. The main reason for this decline is reduced demand for safe-haven assets following positive signals about a possible resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
