The situation in Syria continues to escalate. In connection with the mass killings of religious and ethnic minorities, Russia and the US have jointly proposed holding emergency closed consultations of the UN Security Council.
After the change of government in Syria, the country has been engulfed by a wave of brutal repressions. According to media reports, more than 700 civilians have been killed, and the total number of victims has already exceeded 1,000 people. The main targets have been Alawites – the religious community to which former President Bashar al-Assad belonged – as well as Christians, who the new government views as foreign elements in the new political system.
Religious intolerance is on the rise in Israel. In just one week, Jewish extremists have carried out multiple attacks on fellow Jews, mistakenly identifying them as followers of another faith. This highlights a troubling increase in violence and internal tensions within the country.
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has raised alarm over what it describes as Israel’s systematic efforts to drive out the Armenian community from the Old City. According to church representatives, Israeli authorities are using economic and administrative measures to force the reduction of Armenian presence in the historic district and seize church-owned properties. One of the latest tactics includes imposing an overwhelming tax debt on the Armenian Church. If the debt is not paid, Israeli authorities could confiscate church properties in the Armenian Quarter and auction them off, leading to a drastic reduction in Armenian heritage within Jerusalem. The Patriarchate believes these actions are part of a broader strategy to reshape the religious and ethnic makeup of the city in favor of Jewish control, a process often referred to as the Judaization of Jerusalem.
A Call to Recognize the Shared Tragedy in Palestine Pastor Munther Isaac of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bethlehem (occupied Palestine) stated that Palestinian Christians face the same oppression as Muslims. He emphasized that Israel’s actions threaten all Palestinians, regardless of their faith.
Christian communities in Syria are facing increasing pressure from militants. Armed groups are targeting Christians, accusing them of collaborating with enemies and denying them safety and freedom of religion. These actions threaten not only the communities themselves but also the cultural heritage of the region.
