Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, heading an official delegation, recently made a secret visit to the United Arab Emirates. According to Israeli sources, during this closed trip he held talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. The central topic of the meeting was the situation in the Gaza Strip and Tel Aviv’s further actions amid growing international pressure.

Although no public statements were made following the visit, the fact of the trip became known through a leak in Israeli media. The “Kan” television channel confirmed the information, noting that the development of the conflict in Gaza and the regional stance of Arab states were the main topics of discussion. The meeting was held under strict secrecy and was not officially covered by Emirati authorities.

At the same time, criticism toward the UAE from Islamic figures is intensifying. Libya’s Grand Mufti Sadiq al-Ghariani earlier issued a sharp statement accusing several Arab countries — primarily Egypt and the United Arab Emirates — of indirectly assisting the actions of the Israeli regime. According to him, such states “facilitate the enemy’s actions” through political cooperation, economic deals, and diplomatic silence.

Backchannel diplomacy between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi is taking place against the backdrop of the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where the situation remains tense. Israel’s attempts to secure the support of key regional players are intensifying amid international criticism and growing protest sentiment in the Arab world.

The fact of Minister Dermer’s visit to the UAE is viewed by a number of analysts as an attempt to strengthen strategic contacts with Arab monarchies in case of conflict escalation and preparation for possible political scenarios related to settlement. It may also signal coordination of positions regarding control over Palestinian territories in the post-conflict period.
