Google has announced the start of construction of its own nuclear power plant to supply energy to its data centers powered by artificial intelligence technologies. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the startup Kairos Power and with the participation of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The main facility will be built in the U.S. state of Tennessee and will consist of a nuclear reactor with a planned capacity of 50 megawatts.

The new energy facility will be part of Google’s efforts to ensure sustainable energy consumption and reduce its carbon footprint. The company emphasizes that the development of nuclear technologies is a long-term step aimed at supporting the scalability of AI infrastructure, which consumes increasingly more resources. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2030. After the first stage is completed, the project will be expanded: by 2035, the total capacity should increase to 500 megawatts.

The reactor under development will operate on fluoride-salt cooling technology, one of the directions promoted by Kairos Power. This system ensures a high level of safety and operational stability while maintaining relatively compact installation scales. For Google, this will be its first proprietary facility in the field of nuclear energy.

In addition to Google, Microsoft had previously announced plans to launch its own nuclear power plant. Its nuclear facility is expected to be commissioned in 2028. Both corporations are striving to reduce their dependence on traditional energy sources and provide stable power supplies for their computing capacities, which host AI systems, neural networks, and cloud services.

The decision of the largest technology companies to invest in nuclear energy is linked to the growth in data center energy consumption and the need to ensure the sustainability, reliability, and environmental safety of such facilities. Considering the declared shift to carbon-neutral supply chains, nuclear energy is regarded as a key element of the long-term energy supply strategy.
