US President Donald Trump has initiated discussions with leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) on the possibility of imposing high tariffs on imports from China and India. According to the Financial Times, the proposed range is between 50 and 100%.

Officials from the US Treasury explained that the purpose of such measures is to exert additional pressure on Russia. Washington expects that the economic losses for Beijing and New Delhi, as major partners of Moscow, will push the Russian side toward negotiations and an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

The Trump administration emphasized that the imposed tariffs would be temporary. They promised that the duties would be lifted on the day hostilities conclude. At the same time, the White House expects full support from its G7 allies and insists on coordinated actions to ensure the measures have maximum impact.

The initiative reflects the US strategy of using trade restrictions as a lever of influence in international relations. The introduction of such high tariffs against China and India could become one of the most far-reaching decisions in recent global trade policy and will inevitably trigger countermeasures from the affected countries.

At the upcoming G7 leaders’ meeting, details of the possible restrictions, their impact on global trade, and the coordination of a unified approach to countering Russia will be discussed.
