Anti-Turkish Protests Erupt in Montenegro After Attack in Podgorica
Mass protests took place in the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, following an incident in which a Turkish citizen attacked a local resident. Dozens of activists gathered outside the government building, chanting slogans such as “Turks out!” and “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Turk” (ko ne skače, taj je Turčin).
The demonstration began spontaneously and quickly turned into a large march through the city’s central streets. Participants demanded that the authorities impose restrictions on the entry of Turkish citizens into the country and tighten migration controls. The situation escalated after a video of the attack circulated on social media, sparking widespread public outrage.
The Montenegrin government promptly announced the suspension of the visa-free regime with Turkey. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the decision was made “to ensure public safety and prevent possible provocations.” Cabinet representatives stressed that the measure is temporary and aimed at stabilizing the situation.
The Turkish Embassy in Podgorica expressed regret over the incident and called on the public to avoid inciting ethnic hatred. However, tensions continue to rise in Montenegrin society, and police presence has been strengthened in several cities.
Local media report that several rioters were detained for damaging property and attempting to storm the government building. Law enforcement agencies have urged citizens to remain calm and not succumb to provocations.
