Visa and Mastercard have begun developing and launching new payment systems for autonomous AI agents, collectively referred to as agentic commerce. The platforms are designed to allow artificial intelligence to make purchases and pay for services on behalf of users while ensuring full control, transparency, and compliance with security requirements. The launch of the solutions took place in October 2025.

Visa introduced the Trusted Agent Protocol platform, aimed at securely integrating AI agents into the payment ecosystem. The protocol allows marketplaces to identify verified agents and accept payments without complex additional integrations. Key features include signaling the AI agent’s intent, verifying user identity, and securely transmitting payment data. The project involves Microsoft, Shopify, Stripe, and Worldpay. The platform is already open to developers and available on GitHub.

Mastercard, in turn, launched the Agent Pay Merchant Acceptance Framework. The solution is designed to register and authenticate AI agents before transactions and facilitates large-scale adoption of agent-based payments. Users retain full control over spending, including setting limits and rules. Security is ensured through the use of agentic tokens, and compatibility with existing standards, including OpenAI and Google protocols, is also provided.

Both payment systems use Cloudflare Web Bot Auth technology, which makes it possible to distinguish legitimate AI agents from automated bots. This reduces fraud risks and simplifies the payment process. The solutions integrate with the OpenAI, Google AP2, and other ecosystems, developing in parallel rather than competing with each other.

Mass adoption of agent-based payment mechanisms in chatbots and digital services is expected to begin in 2026. Experts link this to a sharp increase in AI system activity – according to forecasts, traffic generated by artificial intelligence could grow by 4,700 percent. The new payment platforms are viewed as a foundation for building a secure and scalable model of agentic commerce in the digital economy.
