Colombian President Responds to Trump: “He Is Not the King of Our Country”

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has responded to a harsh remark by U.S. President Donald Trump, who earlier claimed that “Colombia is out of control.” In reply, Petro stressed that his country is independent and does not take instructions from abroad.

“Of course Colombia is not under his control. In a democratic nation, the government is controlled by the people — not by Trump. He is not a king in Colombia — we do not accept kings here. He may speak with me, but as an equal. Giving us orders? No, sir,” Petro stated.

The Colombian leader noted that Trump’s irritation stemmed from his refusal to participate in any military operations against Venezuela. According to Petro, Washington had expected Colombia’s support for a possible invasion, but Bogotá chose a stance of non-intervention and peaceful conflict resolution in the region.

The president also reminded that Colombia’s foreign policy is based on the principles of sovereignty and mutual respect: “We cooperate with the United States, but we will not allow Colombia to be turned into an instrument of foreign interests. Our priorities are peace, democracy, and the development of Latin America.”

Petro’s statement sparked wide regional discussion. Many Latin American leaders voiced support for Colombia’s position, noting that Trump’s remarks reflected the old U.S. tradition of pressuring South American nations.

Political analysts emphasize that the current conflict illustrates the region’s growing desire for autonomy and independence from external influence. Colombia — once considered one of Washington’s key allies — is increasingly asserting an independent stance in international affairs.
