Conti Tower Collapses in Rome’s Imperial Forums
In the historic center of Rome, the Conti Tower — a 13th-century landmark located on the Imperial Forums — has collapsed. Italy’s Civil Protection Service reported that victims may be trapped under the rubble, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
According to Corriere della Sera, the area around the tower has been cordoned off, with traffic and pedestrian movement temporarily restricted. Firefighters, restoration experts, and architects are working on-site to assess the extent of the damage and the risks to nearby buildings.
ANSA clarified that the tower was under restoration at the time of the incident. The work involved strengthening the foundation and restoring the facade, but the cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. Investigators are considering possible construction errors or structural weakening caused by vibrations from traffic and recent rainfall.
The Conti Tower, also known as Torre dei Conti, was built in 1238 and long remained one of the symbols of medieval Rome. After the 1348 earthquake, it lost its upper levels but retained its architectural value and was considered an important tourist attraction.
