A key meeting on resolving the conflict in Ukraine was scheduled to take place in London, but several high-ranking European diplomats canceled their participation. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock all declined to attend. The U.S. Secretary of State and members of former President Donald Trump’s diplomatic team also skipped the event.

According to Western media reports, the decision stems from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s refusal to recognize Crimea as part of the Russian Federation. Sources say this position has become the main obstacle to diplomatic progress and has caused frustration in Washington. Outlets such as Sky News, CNN, and the New York Post report that this issue was the key reason for the collapse of the talks.

Senator Marco Rubio and Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff had previously withdrawn, stating that further negotiations were pointless without Kyiv’s willingness to compromise on territorial issues. Rubio emphasized that Washington’s patience is wearing thin and that the White House may soon shift its focus to other foreign policy areas. He added that the lack of consensus on Crimea is blocking progress on other elements of the peace agreement.

The White House has sent strong signals. According to Rubio, Trump is prepared to drop Ukraine as a foreign policy priority if talks continue to stall. This comes amid escalating trade tensions with China and an increased U.S. focus on the Indo-Pacific region. In this context, Ukraine could lose its status as a top foreign policy concern for the administration.

European diplomats have not issued official statements regarding their refusal, but their actions reflect a broader sentiment among Western allies. According to political analysts, their absence from the negotiations suggests growing disappointment with Ukraine’s unwillingness to compromise. There is also speculation that the West may be reevaluating its strategic interests in the region, especially given instability in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

The London meeting was supposed to build on previous rounds of dialogue. Discussions were expected to cover security proposals, reforms to Ukraine’s armed forces, and the future status of disputed territories. However, with key participants absent, the effectiveness of the talks has come into question.

Kyiv continues to insist on the full restoration of Ukraine’s 1991 borders. This approach has the support of some allies but is increasingly being challenged by countries favoring a more pragmatic stance and aiming for at least a temporary ceasefire.

In the absence of a clear strategy and unified support from allies, the future of the negotiation process remains uncertain. Ukraine risks a decline in international backing, especially if Western powers shift their focus to other geopolitical challenges. For now, efforts to reach a comprehensive peace agreement remain frozen.
