Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the loss of control over Nagorno-Karabakh played a positive role in strengthening Armenia’s statehood. According to him, Armenia did not lose Karabakh but gained sovereignty, having freed itself from foreign policy and historical constraints that had long hindered the formation of a fully independent nation.

Speaking at an event in Yerevan, Pashinyan emphasized that for many years, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue had been used as a pretext to keep Armenia in a state of dependency. He noted that regional and international powers, as well as domestic political groups, had repeatedly invoked the Karabakh issue to slow down institutional development and reforms. With this issue now out of the active agenda, Armenia has the opportunity to focus on a sovereign national course.

According to the prime minister, since the end of the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia has begun to reassess its role in the region and the meaning of national statehood. Pashinyan noted that the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity ended the long-standing conflict but also created conditions for a rethinking of Armenia’s national strategy.

He stressed that Armenian policy is shifting its focus from territorial disputes to issues of development, democratization, and international integration. The Armenian government is exploring new opportunities for economic and institutional growth, as well as for strengthening ties with regional and global partners.

Although the domestic debate over Karabakh remains tense, the Armenian authorities insist on the need to close historical chapters and move toward a new stage of development. Pashinyan also stated that Armenia’s long-term stability and security should be based on a pragmatic approach to both international relations and internal governance.

Armenian officials have previously spoken in favor of recognizing Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and renouncing claims to Nagorno-Karabakh. This has become part of a new strategy aimed at stabilizing the South Caucasus and reducing military tensions. The Armenian leadership continues its course of institutional strengthening and governance reform.
