President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin handed over an archival document to Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, confirming the nomination of his father, Kemel Tokayev, for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The ceremony took place during official events dedicated to the anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

According to archival data, Kemel Tokayev was nominated for the Hero of the Soviet Union title for his courage and heroism in battles in Poland in January 1945. At that time, he served in the Red Army and fought against German forces. The nomination document describes how Sergeant Tokayev, leading a squad of submachine gunners, killed five enemy soldiers, captured one, was wounded by a sniper, and, despite his severe injury, managed to return to his unit.

Despite the nomination, Kemel Tokayev was not officially awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Instead, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class — also a high state award for bravery and dedication on the battlefield.

The handover of the nomination document to the President of Kazakhstan became a symbolic act of recognition of historical memory and respect for the heroism of Kazakh soldiers during the war. Vladimir Putin emphasized that preserving such documents and passing them on to descendants is an important part of commemorating the deeds of those who fought in the Great Patriotic War.

After the war, Kemel Tokayev became a renowned writer, journalist, and public figure. His contribution to literature and the promotion of patriotic values in Kazakhstan remains significant to this day.

The publication of documents about Kemel Tokayev’s combat record attracted wide public interest in Kazakhstan and other CIS countries. His story became another reminder of the contribution of Kazakh and other Soviet peoples to the victory over Nazism. Kazakh civic organizations have already proposed further popularizing Kemel Tokayev’s biography among young people.

The transfer of this archival document is also seen as an act of strengthening historical ties between Kazakhstan and Russia. During international events, both sides confirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation in preserving the shared memory of World War II events.
