RSF Advance in Sudan and Take Control of Babanusa
The Rapid Support Forces have secured Babanusa and continue advancing toward Heglig. The Sudanese army acknowledges the loss of the base but reports ongoing fighting. The situation affects control over the western regions of the country.
Armed conflict between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army continues to develop in Sudan. According to local structures, the RSF have recorded one of the most significant advances during the entire period of confrontation, taking control of the city of Babanusa and the headquarters of the twenty-second infantry division located in it. This area had been encircled for about two years, which made it an important defense node for the Sudanese army. Representatives of the armed forces confirmed the loss of the base but reported that separate clashes within the city continue.
The fall of Babanusa became a consecutive stage after the authorities lost El-Fasher, which had previously remained the largest stronghold of the army in the Darfur region. After losing these territories, the western regions of the country effectively came out of the control of the central government. Structures monitoring the situation note that attempts by the Sudanese army to organize a counteroffensive did not lead to changes in the operational situation. Despite having fewer personnel, the RSF managed to maintain the initiative thanks to receiving equipment and air defense systems.
The Rapid Support Forces continue advancing and securing positions on key transport routes. Their operations are aimed at establishing control over roads connecting western areas with central and southern territories. As a result of the RSF's advance, the threat has increased for several remaining army strongholds, including Dilling, Kadugli, and the oil region of Heglig. These directions have strategic importance as they provide access to infrastructure and resources that influence the economic situation of the country.
The oil region of Heglig is one of the most important facilities for Sudan’s economy and the infrastructure of neighboring South Sudan. In previous periods, the area was subject to attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles, which led to temporary suspension of extraction processes and evacuation of personnel. If armed clashes approach this area, there is a possibility of disruption to oil transit flows, which play a key role in forming the budget revenues of both states.
According to official statements, the Sudanese army continues to strengthen defenses in directions considered the most vulnerable. Forces and equipment are being redeployed, and enhanced control is being exercised over territories that remain under government control. At the same time, it is reported that certain garrisons face difficulties with supplies and coordination of actions, which is related to geographic features and the inability to quickly restore lost communications.
The shifting of lines of contact is changing the overall balance of forces in Western Sudan. The situation in the region remains unstable, and further dynamics will depend on the ability of the parties to hold strategic directions. Analytical structures note that developments affect not only the course of armed conflict but also socio-economic parameters of regions where clashes continue.
As the RSF advance toward the eastern areas, new risks may arise for facilities that ensure energy supply and transport communication. Authorities report that they are assessing consequences and considering possible measures to reduce the threat of infrastructure disruption. At present, heightened security measures remain in place, and official structures are monitoring the situation to ensure timely response to further changes.
