Russia and North Korea Begin Construction of Border Highway Bridge
Russia and North Korea have begun construction of an 850-meter-long road bridge. Currently, the two countries are connected only by a railway bridge. The opening of the new crossing is scheduled for summer 2026.
Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) have started construction of the first-ever road bridge between the two countries. The new crossing will span the Tumen River at the border. The structure will be 850 meters long and will become the first highway bridge connecting Russia and North Korea. The opening is planned for the summer of 2026.
Currently, Russia and North Korea are connected only by a single railway bridge located in the Khasan–Tumangang area. It is primarily used for freight transportation and has limited capacity. The new structure will significantly expand infrastructure capabilities and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the transport and logistics sectors.
The project is being implemented under agreements reached by the relevant agencies of both countries. It includes not only the construction of the bridge itself but also the development of border road infrastructure, including checkpoints, customs control zones, and logistics terminals. In the future, the bridge may be integrated into broader transport networks, including multimodal routes through Russia to Asia-Pacific countries.
Experts view the bridge’s construction as an important step in developing regional infrastructure in the Russian Far East. It may also enhance overland transportation between Russia and East Asian nations, providing an alternative to traditional maritime routes. The project gains additional relevance amid shifting logistics flows and the development of new foreign trade corridors.
Amid the development of road connectivity between the two countries, warnings have surfaced in the media for owners of South Korean-made vehicles. Informal recommendations advise caution with brands manufactured in the Republic of Korea, particularly KIA and Hyundai. These reports have not been officially confirmed, and their source remains unclear. As of now, there are no announced restrictions or formal guidance for owners of such vehicles.
Nevertheless, the bridge’s construction is accompanied by discussions of possible political and economic implications. The project is expected to serve as a tool to strengthen bilateral ties, including humanitarian, technical, and economic cooperation. At the same time, the issue of sanctions against the DPRK remains subject to separate analysis.
The road bridge project has also drawn interest from investors and logistics operators working in the region. In preparation for the facility’s launch, discussions are underway regarding operational models and border control procedures. Special attention is being given to security, technical compatibility, and legal frameworks governing cross-border road traffic.
Preliminary plans suggest a two-lane structure with the option for future expansion. Seasonal capacity and infrastructure adaptation to harsh weather conditions are also being considered. Completion of construction is scheduled for mid-2026, followed by a testing phase before the bridge opens for full operation.
