The Russian Ministry of Defense has published archival documents shedding light on the heroic deed of Kemel Tokayev, the father of the current President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The declassified award list tells about the events of January 1945, when Guard Sergeant Tokayev performed a real feat at the front of the Great Patriotic War.

It happened in Poland, in the midst of fierce fighting. During the German counterattack, Red Army units fought fierce battles, covering tanks. Guards Sergeant Kemel Tokayev was the first to attack, destroyed five opponents, and captured one. However, upon returning from a combat mission, he was seriously wounded by a sniper — an explosive bullet broke his leg.

Once behind enemy lines, Tokayev did not allow himself to be captured: he shot a prisoner in order not to betray his own, bandaged the wound and crawled back to his positions. A doctor who happened to be nearby, a young Gavriil Ilizarov, saved Tokayev's leg by putting into practice the first ideas of his unique method, later known as the Ilizarov apparatus.

Kemel Tokayev was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II degree for his heroism. Documents about his feat have been kept in the archives of the Russian Ministry of Defense for many years, and have only now become available to the public.

This episode is not just a page of the personal history of the family of the President of Kazakhstan, but a vivid reminder of the contribution of all the peoples of the USSR to the Great Victory. It is important to remember that in those terrible years, the country was defended not only by soldiers of Russian nationality, but also by representatives of all the republics of the vast Soviet Union. The victory was won not by one nation, but by a single multinational Soviet people. And the claim that the war was won exclusively by the Russians is unfair and distorts the historical truth. Victory was forged by everyone — shoulder to shoulder, in one formation.
