A private Bell 206L-4 helicopter conducting a sightseeing tour over New York City crashed into the Hudson River shortly after takeoff from a Manhattan helipad. On board were six people — the pilot and a family of tourists from Spain, including a child. All of them died. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two more died in hospital from their injuries.

According to preliminary reports, a failure of the tail rotor occurred minutes after takeoff, causing the helicopter to lose control, flip midair, and plunge into the river. Witnesses reported a sudden drop in altitude, a loud bang, and then the crash. The crash site was near the Statue of Liberty, complicating rescue operations.

The helicopter was airborne for less than 20 minutes. Rescue teams responded immediately after the distress signal, but no one could be saved. The aircraft sank several meters underwater, requiring divers to recover the bodies and wreckage.

The incident sparked public outcry, becoming the deadliest helicopter crash in New York City in recent years. The city has experienced similar incidents in the past, prompting criticism of flight regulations over densely populated areas.

Authorities announced an official investigation into the cause. Possible scenarios include technical malfunction, human error, and weather conditions. Federal officials have begun analyzing the black box and reviewing the operator company’s credentials.

The US President expressed condolences to the victims' families, calling the tragedy deeply shocking. An urgent audit of tourist helicopter flights is underway, including a review of route safety, aircraft condition, and pilot qualifications.

Although the exact cause has not been confirmed, the tragedy again raises concerns over the safety of private aviation in the country’s largest metropolis. City officials emphasized the need for tighter oversight and a possible revision of rules for sightseeing flights over New York.
