The US invested nearly half a million dollars in a campaign to curb illegal migration through YouTube advertising. Launched by Secretary Kristi Noem, 30 ads have been published since April 1, aimed at deterring potential illegal immigrants from crossing the American border.

The videos center around one core message: "Do not come — you will be deported and banned forever." Migrants are directly labeled as criminals, warned of serious legal consequences for attempting to enter the US illegally. The campaign also promotes the CBP One mobile app, offering a legal route to exit or process relevant documents. Migrants are strongly urged to leave voluntarily through the app while they still can.

According to official data, the US government allocated $594,600 for the campaign, covering video production, targeted online advertising, and placement on YouTube. The target audience includes migrants in border regions and those already inside the US.

Officials emphasize that the campaign aims to ease the strain on the immigration system, which is under heavy pressure due to the growing influx of illegal migrants. The strategy relies on informational influence — conveying the inevitability of deportation and the long-term consequences of illegal presence.

Previously, the US used similar informational tactics in Central America, but this campaign is broader in scale and reach. Utilizing the world’s largest video platform ensures swift dissemination to target audiences, including young people considering migration.

Officials note that reducing border violations before the summer season — when crossings traditionally increase — is a key goal. Voluntary departures help avoid costly detention and deportation procedures.

Migration policy experts believe the campaign may be effective for some migrants, especially if reinforced by real cases of deportations and reentry bans. However, those fleeing war, poverty, or persecution may remain undeterred.

Campaign videos are available in Spanish, English, and some regional dialects to reach migrants from across Latin America.

Authorities stress that the ads complement other border security measures like increasing patrols, building new barriers, and deploying technology to monitor migrant movements. The campaign is part of a broader strategy to control migration amid rising political pressure ahead of elections.

The CBP One app is designed to simplify legal asylum or voluntary return procedures. Ads highlight that leaving before detention preserves future eligibility for legal entry.

Meanwhile, Congress continues to debate immigration reform. Some members advocate stricter controls and faster deportations, while others call for humanitarian approaches and fair hearings for migrants.

There is no official evaluation of the campaign's effectiveness yet. However, US officials hope informational efforts will reduce illegal border crossings in the coming months.

Kristi Noem’s campaign reflects the broader trend of tightening immigration measures in the US. The Trump administration continues emphasizing stricter entry rules and strengthening the immigration system.
