Trump and Putin Prepare Meeting on Ukraine
US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Vladimir Putin to discuss resolving the conflict in Ukraine, including a possible territorial exchange, which is causing protests from Kyiv and Europe.
US President Donald Trump is taking steps to achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to reports from Washington, he plans to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, at which a territorial exchange option will be discussed as part of agreements to end hostilities. This scenario has already provoked a sharp rejection from the Ukrainian leadership and European allies, who state that any territorial concessions are unacceptable.
US Vice President JD Vance noted that American society is tired of funding the Ukrainian conflict, and taxpayers are demanding a reduction in foreign expenditures. According to him, ending financial support will allow budget funds to be redirected to domestic needs, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianna Whitaker reported that, ahead of the leaders’ meeting, technical groups from both countries are holding closed consultations. The discussions cover legal aspects of possible territorial changes, mechanisms of international recognition, and security guarantees. Special attention is being paid to prisoner exchanges, infrastructure restoration, and ensuring humanitarian missions’ access.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the country’s Constitution prohibits the transfer of territories and that Kyiv will not agree to conditions violating sovereignty and territorial integrity. European leaders expressed a united stance, stressing that peace talks cannot take place without Ukraine’s participation and must take its demands into account.
Washington views the upcoming meeting as a possible turning point. The US administration believes that a compromise agreement will help reduce tensions and create conditions for a phased settlement. The plan may include a cessation of hostilities, the establishment of a control regime, and the participation of international observers.
According to the American side, territorial settlement must be accompanied by security measures and long-term guarantees. The Russian side, in turn, insists on legally securing the new territorial status and ensuring stability in the region.
The date of October 10, 2025, when the Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced in Oslo, is seen in Trump’s circle as a possible benchmark for completing key stages of the negotiations. Some analysts believe that a peace agreement on Ukraine could become a significant achievement, strengthening the president’s position on the international stage.
The final results of the consultations will depend on the willingness of the parties to make compromises. The reaction of Ukraine and its allies will determine whether the initiative can move into the implementation stage. At present, the negotiation process remains closed, and official comments are limited to confirming readiness for dialogue.
