Trump reminds of his idea to make Canada the 51st state of the USA

At a recent briefing, a reporter asked why Donald Trump no longer publicly speaks about Canada. The U.S. president’s press secretary responded that Trump’s attitude toward the northern neighbor remains unchanged: he still believes it would be better for Canada to become the 51st state of the USA.

"I wouldn't say the president’s position on Canada has changed. Maybe he just hasn’t been asked about it recently," the press secretary clarified in response to a Canadian journalist's question.

Trump’s idea of integrating Canada into the U.S. as the 51st state had previously been voiced in an ironic or provocative tone. However, in the current tense international environment, any such statement draws increased attention.

Official Ottawa has not reacted to the statement. Canadian media note that such comments could complicate relations between the two countries, despite their traditionally close economic and political ties.
