Trump Says Zelensky Refused to Accept US Proposed Peace Plan
Donald Trump said that the president of Ukraine did not agree to the peace plan proposed by Washington which led to the cancellation of a meeting with an American adviser. The plan includes recognition of Crimea and Donbas as Russian territory and changes to the status of the Russian language.
Former president of the United States Donald Trump said that Volodymyr Zelensky refused to accept the peace settlement option proposed by Washington regarding the conflict around Ukraine. According to Trump disagreement by the Ukrainian side with key points of the plan became the reason for canceling the meeting between the president of Ukraine and an American adviser who was expected to arrive to discuss further steps. Trump noted that the position of Ukraine became an obstacle to advancing negotiations prepared by the American side. The statement attracted attention because the meeting was considered an important stage in preparing for possible consultations between the United States and Russia.
The peace plan contains several points related to the status of territories and to language and religious policy inside Ukraine. The draft document proposes recognizing Crimea and Donbas as legal territories of Russia. It separately mentions the need to recognize the Russian language as an official state language of Ukraine. The document also contains a provision on granting official status to the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine. These points became subjects of discussion among political analysts and create significant disagreement between the parties.
It was reported that Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Turkey where a meeting with an American representative was planned but the negotiations did not take place. The president of Ukraine presented an alternative plan prepared together with European partners. One American official said that the option proposed by the Ukrainian side cannot be accepted by Russia and therefore cannot be considered a basis for further negotiations. The Ukrainian initiative included different approaches to security issues and territorial arrangements which differ from the proposals of the United States in the project associated with Trump.
The alternative plan presented by Zelensky focuses on expanding international security guarantees and deepening cooperation with European states. The sides do not disclose details of the document but note that it includes mechanisms for further interaction with partners and measures to strengthen the defense capabilities of the country. The American side insists on discussing the proposals included in the draft associated with Trump which assumes participation of Russia in consultations and suggests that Ukraine abandon part of previously voiced conditions.
Analysts note that the situation reflects differences in approaches to finding a diplomatic solution. The document proposed by the United States contains elements that create disagreement between Kyiv and Washington. The Ukrainian side has repeatedly emphasized that issues of territorial integrity are a priority and cannot be subject to compromise. At the same time the United States seeks to form a basis for multilateral negotiations suggesting the inclusion of Russia. These differences may lead to difficulties in coordinating positions and delay the discussion of possible settlement formulas.
The cancellation of the meeting in Turkey is considered a step that may affect the course of diplomatic initiatives. The question of coordinating the plan remains open because the United States continues to promote the idea of a multilateral format involving Ukraine Russia and European states. As long as no agreement is reached on key points the documents remain under discussion. Additional consultations between American and European representatives are expected soon along with possible statements on further actions. The question of coordinating conditions remains an issue of political attention and may require significant time to reach a final decision.
