Smartphones, computers, and other types of consumer electronics have been excluded from the new 145% tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese goods. The list of exemptions was published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The measure aims to protect the domestic market from sharp price increases and to maintain stability for companies like Apple, Samsung, and other global manufacturers.

The exemptions also cover monitors, hard drives, computer processors, semiconductors, and memory chips. These components are critical to global supply chains and electronics manufacturing, and full tariffs could have disrupted supplies and caused a sharp rise in prices.

The decision was made after the Trump administration announced sweeping 145% tariffs on a broad range of Chinese products. These measures sparked concern among market participants and tech companies, especially since a significant portion of electronics is assembled in China.

Tech giants like Apple manufacture most of their products at Chinese facilities. Imposing full tariffs could have significantly increased retail prices in the U.S. and hurt consumer demand. The exemption temporarily removes this threat and allows companies to adapt to the new trade policy.

However, sources note that the tariff exemption may be temporary. There is discussion about implementing softer rates — below the announced 145% — though a final decision has not yet been made. The White House is seeking to balance the protection of American business interests with continued pressure on China in the ongoing trade standoff.

Experts also point out that this move may be aimed at avoiding domestic criticism ahead of elections, since rising electronics prices would directly affect millions of consumers.
