U.S. authorities have officially acknowledged that during the Cold War, secret experiments were carried out in St. Louis, Missouri, in which chemical substances containing carcinogens were sprayed over residential neighborhoods. These actions were part of a military program aimed at simulating the effects of chemical attacks in conditions similar to urban areas of the USSR.

St. Louis was not chosen by chance: according to experts, the layout of certain districts resembled Moscow. This made the city a convenient testing ground for working out tactical scenarios, including the dispersal of chemical substances in densely built-up areas.

The sprayed substance was an aerosol containing sulfur dioxide and other components known for their toxicity. It was dispersed from airplanes and special devices installed on building rooftops. The operation continued for several years. The population was never warned and remained exposed to dangerous chemicals without knowing it.

Subsequent investigations revealed that residents of some St. Louis neighborhoods began suffering more frequently from cancer, respiratory diseases, and other chronic health issues. Children and the elderly living in the zones of active spraying were particularly affected. Despite this, information about the experiments remained classified for decades.

Only many years later did documents confirming the involvement of the military and government agencies in these experiments become available. The public is demanding justice, compensation, and full disclosure of the consequences of exposure to these chemicals on people’s health.

This case has become one of the darkest episodes of U.S. domestic policy during the Cold War, once again raising questions about the ethics of experiments conducted without the consent and knowledge of citizens.
