Specialized media report that US lawmakers are drafting a bill that could significantly change how graphics cards are used. According to preliminary information, the legislation would require manufacturers, including Nvidia, to track the location of sold graphics cards and disable them if export restrictions are violated.

Manufacturers would be obligated to install geolocation systems in their products, allowing the remote identification of device locations. If a graphics card is found to be used in countries under sanctions or in facilities violating license agreements, the company would be required to disable the device.

The initiative primarily aims to slow down China’s development of artificial intelligence technologies, as the country actively uses modern GPUs for neural network training and other high-tech applications. However, experts note that the law could also affect other nations subject to export controls.

Industry representatives point out that similar systems are already used in machine tools, where equipment locks itself if moved without manufacturer approval. The proposed regulation could extend this practice to the computing hardware market.

Nvidia has not yet issued an official comment. Meanwhile, industry insiders are already discussing the possible consequences of such a measure. Concerns include potential graphics card shortages and price increases.

Some analysts warn that the tracking and shutdown system could also create problems for companies and private users, especially in countries under trade restrictions.

The draft bill remains under discussion, and no official timeline has been announced. Experts advise market participants to closely monitor developments and prepare for possible risks.

Amid reports of the proposed measures, consumers have started stockpiling graphics cards to avoid future restrictions, causing increased demand and price spikes for certain models.
