U.S. Restores Military Base in the Caribbean Near Venezuela
Reuters has reported that the United States has begun modernizing the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico, which was closed more than twenty years ago. The renovation work, launched on September 17, focuses on rebuilding the runway, which experts see as preparation for increasing the intensity of U.S. military operations in the region.
According to sources, the main efforts are directed toward strengthening infrastructure to accommodate and service transport and reconnaissance aircraft. At the same time, the U.S. is expanding facilities at civilian airports in Puerto Rico and on the island of Saint Croix, located about 800 kilometers from Venezuela’s coast. These steps are viewed as part of a strategic deployment ahead of a potential military conflict with the Bolivarian Republic.
American officials claim the restoration of the base is related to “enhancing regional security” and “combating transnational threats.” However, across Latin America, Washington’s actions are seen as a direct signal to Caracas and an attempt to establish an operational foothold to pressure President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump did not rule out a military operation against Venezuela, accusing the country’s leadership of “destabilizing the region and collaborating with drug cartels.” Against this backdrop, the increased U.S. military activity in the Caribbean has raised concerns among South American nations fearing the expansion of the conflict zone.
Analysts note that the modernization of the Roosevelt Roads base is part of a broader U.S. strategy to strengthen its position in the Caribbean, including boosting naval presence, building logistics hubs, and upgrading weapons storage facilities. These measures may serve as preparations for potential operations under the pretext of defending “democratic values” and “combating organized crime.”
