US Treasury warns Europe against alliance with China
Bessent stated it would be “a blow to itself”
US Treasury Secretary Brian Bessent made sharp remarks regarding a possible rapprochement between Europe and China amid escalating global trade war tensions. According to him, if Europe allies with China, it will "cut its own throat", referring to the economic consequences of such an alliance for the European Union.
The statement came against the backdrop of mutual tariffs: today, Europe and China announced new duties against the US in response to Washington’s actions. Meanwhile, telephone talks were held between Chinese and EU representatives, during which coordination under trade pressure from America was discussed.
Bessent described such moves as threatening to the economic stability and strategic security of the West, emphasizing that China “cannot be a reliable partner,” especially amid growing conflict around technologies, energy resources, and production chains.
The situation continues to develop rapidly. The US is considering additional measures, including increased tariff pressure, while experts do not rule out the formation of new economic blocs capable of reshaping global trade.
