Volkswagen has expressed readiness to consider reorienting its factories to produce equipment for the German armed forces as part of Europe’s efforts to rearm. Oliver Blume, the CEO of Europe’s largest automaker, stated that the company has not yet received specific proposals from potential partners but is open to “considering concepts.” His comments came amid changes in Germany’s defense policy, prompted by concerns over a possible reduction in support from the U.S. under Trump’s leadership.

With growing threats in Europe and global instability, manufacturers like Rheinmetall and KNDS Group have started reconfiguring their factories, which previously produced car parts, to produce weaponry. Economists believe that car factories in Germany can afford such a reorientation, as car exports from the country have halved since the peak before the COVID-19 pandemic. This provides additional opportunities for utilizing existing capacities for defense products.

“First and foremost, I believe that, in light of the current geopolitical situation, the decisions being made now in Germany and Europe are exactly what is needed to ensure our security by increasing investments,” Blume emphasized, highlighting the importance of rearmament for strengthening European security.

Blume also noted that Volkswagen has previously worked on similar projects and has the necessary automotive expertise. However, the company is currently in a state of uncertainty, and any initiatives would primarily come from the defense industry. If the opportunity to produce military vehicles arises, Volkswagen will be ready to explore proposals and provide consultation and expert assistance.

The rise in demand for military products, related to Europe’s rearmament plans, has led to a sharp increase in the stock prices of German defense companies, which are ramping up arms production. Against this backdrop, some car factories in Germany have already begun retooling for weapons production, as car manufacturers face a market that has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels.
