Albania Appoints the World’s First Minister of Artificial Intelligence
Albania has appointed a virtual minister of artificial intelligence named Diella. She will handle all matters related to public procurement, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced.
Albania has become the first country in the world where the position of minister is held by artificial intelligence. The new virtual official was named Diella, which translates from Albanian as “sun.” This was announced on Thursday by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
According to him, Diella will oversee issues related to government procurement. Her role will be to process tender proposals submitted by ministries and make decisions on them. In this way, Diella will act as a “servant of state procurement.”
Rama stressed that appointing artificial intelligence as a minister is a step toward the digital transformation of public administration. He noted that the new system will accelerate the review of applications, minimize corruption risks, and increase transparency in the work of government institutions.
The Albanian government believes that the use of artificial intelligence in areas such as public procurement will become an important tool for improving efficiency and strengthening citizens’ trust in state institutions.
Albania’s experiment has attracted international interest, as this is the first official appointment of AI to a ministerial level. Authorities hope that Diella’s experience will prove useful in other areas of governance requiring fast processing of large amounts of data and decision-making.
