Armenia Announces Intent to Join the SCO
Armenia has expressed interest in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which includes Russia, China, India, and other regional countries. The matter is currently under consideration.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia has confirmed Yerevan's interest in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The statement comes amid the country’s ongoing shift in foreign policy priorities and increased engagement with Asian partners.
According to the press service of Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the possibility of participating in the SCO is being evaluated in terms of enhancing international cooperation in security, economics, and humanitarian fields. The statement emphasizes Yerevan’s desire to actively participate in regional mechanisms aimed at sustainable development and strengthening ties with countries of Central and South Asia.
The SCO currently includes Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Founded in 2001, the organization has since expanded its influence and has become one of the key international platforms in Eurasia. Its main areas of activity include counterterrorism, anti-extremism, combating drug trafficking, and fostering economic and cultural cooperation among member states.
Armenia is already involved in the SCO as a dialogue partner but has now officially expressed its interest in obtaining full membership status. This move could be seen as part of Armenia’s policy of diversifying its external relations and strengthening its presence on the international stage.
Foreign ministry officials noted that preparing for potential membership requires consultations with existing member states and fulfilling several procedural conditions. The issue of expanding the organization’s membership is regularly discussed, and several countries have already expressed their intention to apply.
According to analysts, Armenia’s potential accession to the SCO may be perceived as a sign of shifting foreign policy priorities toward a more balanced and multi-vector approach. Participation in regional alliances of this scale provides nations with additional mechanisms to safeguard national interests and a platform for dialogue in the face of international instability.
Further steps toward SCO membership will depend on the outcome of talks with current members and Armenia’s internal political will. If the decision to submit an official application is made, the accession process could take several months to several years, depending on the agreed procedure.
