A new study has shown that cannabis consumption can trigger persistent epigenetic changes in human DNA. Scientists discovered that marijuana impacts more than 10,000 genes associated with cognitive functions, aging processes, and cancer development. These changes affect fundamental mechanisms of bodily regulation.

One of the key findings is that the effects persist even after stopping cannabis use and switching to a healthy lifestyle. Unlike short-term effects, epigenetic changes are stable modifications in gene expression that do not alter the DNA structure itself but significantly influence how cells function. These changes may not be immediately visible but can manifest years or even decades later.

Researchers noted the most significant impact occurs in genome regions responsible for neuroplasticity, immune response, and the cell cycle. This means that regular marijuana smoking can have effects comparable in severity to other carcinogens. The study also found that some genes continued to function abnormally even in users who quit more than five years ago.

Amid the growing legalization of cannabis in many countries, these findings raise serious concerns. Scientists emphasize the need to reconsider public perceptions of marijuana as a "soft" or "safe" substance, particularly among youth.

The epigenetic imprint may be passed to offspring, though this aspect requires further research. Experts already warn that even occasional use of psychoactive substances can leave a trace in genetic regulation, especially in developing and maturing bodies.

The results of the study are expected to form the basis for new medical and educational initiatives aimed at raising awareness of marijuana-related risks and strengthening control over its spread among adolescents and young adults.
