For the first time in China, doctors have implanted extended-release naltrexone capsules under a patient’s skin to treat alcohol addiction, according to China Daily. These are not technological devices or electronic chips, but pharmaceutical capsules that release the active ingredient gradually, ensuring a long-lasting therapeutic effect.

Naltrexone works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, significantly reducing or eliminating the desire for alcohol. The implantable form eliminates the need for daily pills — particularly important for patients struggling with adherence or self-control. The drug remains active for over six months, maintaining a stable effect without requiring regular intake.

The procedure, conducted in a Chinese clinic, is part of a pilot program introducing innovative addiction treatments. The operation lasted less than an hour and required no prolonged recovery. Doctors say the method may become an effective alternative to traditional therapies, especially when combined with psychological support.

Alcohol addiction is one of the most common forms of substance dependence in China. As living standards and urbanization rise, the number of patients with chronic alcoholism continues to grow. One of the most challenging aspects remains relapse — many return to alcohol after completing standard treatment.

The naltrexone implant aims to lower this risk. Continuous presence of the drug in the body prevents the return of pleasurable effects from alcohol, significantly reducing the likelihood of relapse. While used in other countries, this is the first time such a procedure has been done in China.

Local medical experts hail the development as a major step toward personalized medicine. Capsules are tailored to the patient’s body weight, metabolism, and dependency level. If ongoing clinical trials are successful, the method may become available in several Chinese medical centers.

Although the development of extended-release naltrexone capsules began over a decade ago, only now have they received clinical approval in China. Earlier studies in the U.S. and Europe confirmed the method’s effectiveness when used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Naltrexone is non-addictive and has no narcotic effects. It is widely recognized internationally for treating alcohol and opioid dependence. The main drawback of oral forms is the need for daily use, making patient compliance difficult. The implantable version solves this issue, giving doctors better control over treatment.

China’s Ministry of Health is considering including this method in national treatment guidelines. If early results are promising, similar operations may be rolled out in major hospitals across the country. Domestic production of the capsules is also under discussion to lower costs and improve accessibility.

The development of long-term pharmacotherapies for addiction reflects a global trend toward integrated solutions for chronic conditions. Successful implementation of naltrexone capsules may become a cornerstone in systemic addiction treatment, combining medication with social reintegration support.
