Drone attacks in Russia leave 60,000 passengers stranded
Ukrainian drones disrupted aviation across Russia. Flights were delayed, including departures from Kazakhstan and the visit of the Serbian president.
Around 60,000 passengers were stranded in Russian airports due to a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones. Widespread delays and cancellations were reported at dozens of airports, including major hubs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and southern regions of the country. Among those affected were foreign delegations, tourists, workers, and participants in cultural events, including the Kremlin brass band.
Serious disruptions to civilian aviation began after drone strikes across various regions of Russia. Air defense systems were placed on high alert, and airspace over parts of the Central and Southern Federal Districts was temporarily closed. This led to rescheduling of hundreds of flights, with many departures delayed indefinitely or canceled.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who was en route to Moscow, was unable to reach the Russian capital due to the closure of air corridors. His plane was forced to reroute and land in Baku. Serbian delegation officials confirmed the visit had been postponed until flight safety is fully restored.
Delays also affected flights from Kazakhstan to Russia. Passengers reported repeated changes in departure times and a lack of information from airlines. Terminals became overcrowded, with many travelers left without water, food, or basic comfort. Airport services operated in emergency mode but struggled to manage the influx.
Social media posts show photos and videos of overcrowded terminals. People are waiting on the floor, sleeping on luggage, and demanding answers. There is a notable absence of information on when flights might resume. Some airlines have begun distributing drinking water and food, but the scale of the disruption remains large.
Particular attention was drawn to the situation involving the Kremlin brass band, whose members were also among the stranded. The musicians were scheduled to prepare for events related to May 9. This raises questions about readiness for the traditional Victory Day parade.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted in an interview at possible attacks around commemorative dates. The remark sparked speculation in the press and among analysts. However, Ukrainian officials have not made confirmed statements on the matter. Still, the timing of the attacks, coinciding with preparations for commemorative events, has caused concern in Russian society and led to heightened security measures.
According to available information, flight restrictions may remain in place for several days. Aviation security experts highlight the need to adapt civilian logistics to high-risk conditions. Airlines are adjusting routes to bypass potential danger zones.
Meanwhile, Russian officials continue to comment on the situation, assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to stabilize operations. Particular attention is being paid to passenger safety, the protection of property, and the restoration of regular schedules.
