During the night, a strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the western Turkish province of Balıkesir. The epicenter was located near the provincial capital, the city of Balıkesir. According to local authorities, the tremors were recorded at a depth of about ten kilometers. As a result, a residential building in the city center completely collapsed, and private houses in several neighborhoods were damaged.

The tremors were felt in the neighboring provinces of Bursa and Yalova, as well as in the country’s largest city, Istanbul. Residents reported that the shaking lasted for several seconds, causing panic and temporary power outages. In some areas, people left buildings and spent time outside fearing aftershocks.

According to preliminary information, there are injured. Rescue services immediately began clearing the debris and searching for people trapped under the rubble. Fire brigades, police units, medical teams, and volunteers are involved in the operations. The injured are being taken to nearby hospitals, including those in neighboring cities equipped to provide emergency care.

Updated reports indicate that the destruction affected an entire residential block in one of Balıkesir’s districts. According to emergency services, about ten private houses were partially destroyed. Some buildings sustained severe structural damage and were declared uninhabitable. Authorities have set up temporary shelters for people who lost their homes.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) continues to monitor the situation and warns of possible aftershocks. Specialists are inspecting damaged buildings to determine their stability. A state of heightened readiness has been declared in the region, and additional medical teams have been dispatched to hospitals.

Local authorities urge residents to exercise caution, stay away from damaged buildings, and not return home until cleared by experts. Humanitarian organizations have begun supplying food, warm clothing, and essential items for evacuees.
