President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans for active expansion of cooperation with the European Union, focusing on the joint development of a “green corridor” between the EU and Central Asia. His interview was published on the eve of the “Central Asia – European Union” summit, which opens on April 3 in Samarkand with the participation of European leadership and regional heads.

In the interview, Mirziyoyev emphasized that the republic is promoting economic liberalization, easing business conditions, and reducing the tax burden. Special attention is given to establishing a “single window” for foreign investors and modernizing currency regulation. According to him, the priorities remain sustainable development, environmental initiatives, and the implementation of renewable energy sources.

The president noted that in 2024, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and EU countries reached $6.4 billion, an increase of 5.2%. Over a thousand enterprises with European capital operate in the country, and the volume of joint investment projects exceeds 30 billion euros.

One of Uzbekistan’s key initiatives was the proposal to align national infrastructure policies with the pan-European “Global Gateway” initiative. A joint action plan for the development of the Trans-Caspian transport corridor has also been proposed, which, according to Mirziyoyev, will boost direct investment and technology transfer.

Priority areas of partnership with the EU include harmonization of technical standards, simplification of trade procedures, expanded market access for products, and European business participation in infrastructure projects. Special emphasis is placed on the digital economy and modernization of logistics chains.

The main focus of Mirziyoyev’s speech was the “green agenda.” He announced the launch of a project to create a “green strategic corridor” between Central Asia and Europe via the Caspian and Black Seas. Uzbekistan has already built 14 solar and wind power plants, with 50 more projects planned, totaling 24,000 megawatts in capacity.

The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 54% within five years and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 16 million tons. A Regional “green” development concept will also be presented, including programs for water conservation, glacier monitoring, and modernization of the irrigation system.

The Samarkand summit is expected to be attended by European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.
