EU Demands Humanitarian Access to Gaza
Germany, France, and the UK have urged Israel to allow humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza and called for a ceasefire and the disarmament of Hamas. The UN reports critical shortages of essential supplies.
The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement stressing the urgent need to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The statement emphasizes Israel’s legal obligation to allow unimpeded humanitarian access and states that humanitarian supplies must not be used as a political tool.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that priorities include a ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the reopening of humanitarian corridors. He also called for the complete disarmament of Hamas in Gaza, adding that the long-term solution must include the two-state principle—Israel and Palestine coexisting in peace and mutual recognition.
The European stance reflects growing concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to UN Secretary-General spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, no food, fuel, or medicine has entered the strip since early March. He warned that essential supplies are critically low and humanitarian agencies can no longer operate at full capacity.
Dujarric added that food stocks are nearly depleted, and essential medical supplies are lacking. Hospitals and clinics are operating under extreme shortages, and ambulance services are being curtailed due to fuel shortages.
The situation is worsened by movement restrictions within Gaza. The UN reported that bakeries are closing, humanitarian warehouses are empty, and access to certain areas is completely lost due to ongoing hostilities and mandatory evacuation orders that obstruct delivery and distribution.
The international community continues to call for an immediate cessation of violence and the opening of humanitarian corridors. Despite announcements of temporary ceasefires, access remains restricted, and most deliveries are blocked. Aid agencies warn that without access to food and medicine, Gaza may face famine and a full-scale humanitarian disaster.
Amid the continuing conflict and growing international criticism of Israel, EU foreign ministers also stressed that lasting peace is impossible without a political resolution that includes recognition of Palestinian rights and security for both sides. The statement calls for renewed political negotiations under international mediation.
Germany, France, and the UK expressed readiness to support aid efforts and the rebuilding of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure. They reiterated that international law requires all parties to protect civilians and prohibits the use of starvation as a weapon.
The UN Security Council is expected to convene again in the coming days to address Gaza. New proposals for urgent humanitarian aid, including delivery under international oversight, are anticipated. Meanwhile, pressure on Israel to open corridors and permit humanitarian missions is intensifying from both European partners and aid organizations.
