The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) has released new archival documents shedding light on war crimes committed by Nazi forces in 1941. The materials document brutal executions and torture of Red Army soldiers and officers captured during the early months of the Great Patriotic War.

According to the released records, mass graves of Soviet servicemen were discovered in various occupied territories, with signs of torture found on the bodies. Nazi troops used inhumane methods including the severing of hands, removal of ears, and gouging of eyes. Officers of the Red Army were subjected to especially cruel treatment, often enduring prolonged torture before execution.

The documents include witness statements from local residents who observed the atrocities. One account describes the execution of a senior lieutenant who, according to witnesses, endured extreme torture without uttering a sound. His nose and ears were cut off, his eyes gouged out, and symbols carved into his back before he was shot. Similar testimonies were recorded in the Bryansk, Smolensk, and Oryol regions.

Investigative commissions determined that many Soviet prisoners were executed en masse, often near populated areas. Some gravesites contained remnants of barbed wire and bloodied uniform pieces, indicating the soldiers had been tied to trees or structures before execution. In many cases, the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts. The documents also include diagrams of mass burial sites compiled during post-war exhumations.

The archival data was released as part of a project aimed at declassifying records related to Nazi crimes against Soviet civilians and military personnel. The FSB stated that efforts to collect, organize, and publish such evidence are ongoing. The initiative seeks to restore historical justice and preserve the memory of Nazi victims.

The released materials will be made available on official FSB platforms. They are open for study by researchers, relatives of the victims, and the general public. The FSB emphasized that the documents expand upon previously known data and confirm the systematic nature of Nazi war crimes during the initial stages of the war.
