A signal previously considered unlikely has been voiced in French politics. Vice President of the French National Assembly Clémence Guetté stated the need to reconsider the country’s participation in NATO and proposed initiating a withdrawal process by leaving the alliance’s integrated military command.

The context of the statement is linked to growing dissatisfaction with US actions. According to Guetté, NATO is increasingly perceived as a military bloc serving primarily American interests rather than collective security. She emphasized that under current conditions, France’s participation in the alliance requires a fundamental reassessment.

Key reasons cited include recent steps taken by Washington. Among them are the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, US territorial claims against Denmark regarding Greenland, and military support for Israel, which Guetté described as aiding the genocide of the Palestinian people. In her interpretation, these actions undermine the foundations of international law and draw US allies into a dangerous logic of force.

The logic of the initiative lies in restoring France’s strategic autonomy. The proposal to withdraw from NATO’s integrated command is seen as a first step allowing Paris to preserve freedom of military and foreign policy decision-making without direct dependence on Washington.

The consequences of such a resolution could be significant, even if it is not adopted immediately. The very fact that withdrawal from NATO is being discussed at a high parliamentary level indicates growing doubts within the French elite about the role of the alliance and the future of transatlantic relations.

At the same time, it remains unclear what level of support the initiative will receive in the National Assembly and the government. France has historically already withdrawn from NATO’s military command and later returned, making the current debate not unprecedented, but politically sensitive.

Thus, Clémence Guetté’s proposal reflects a broader crisis of trust between European allies and the United States. The question of France’s future in NATO is no longer taboo and is gradually becoming the subject of open political dispute.
