The Indian authorities have decided to urgently expel all Pakistani citizens currently in the country under the visa-free agreement within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that all such individuals must leave the country within 48 hours. This measure was taken in response to a terrorist attack in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

An official representative of the Indian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the decision was based on national security concerns and is a direct reaction to recent events. The Indian side did not disclose the details of the incident that prompted this step, but stated that the threat posed by individuals with connections to Pakistan is taken very seriously.

Additionally, New Delhi announced the expulsion of several Pakistani representatives accredited in the Indian capital. India is expelling defense, naval, and air force advisers at the Pakistani High Commission. They have been given one week to leave the country. The Indian side claims these measures stem from growing tensions and suspicions of unfriendly activities by diplomats.

The visa-free regime between the countries under SAARC is granted under special humanitarian, business, or cultural initiatives. However, due to escalating bilateral tensions, the Indian government is temporarily suspending this regime for Pakistani citizens. The Foreign Ministry representative noted that this suspension is an exceptional case and does not affect other SAARC member states.

Jammu and Kashmir has remained a high-risk zone for many years. India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of supporting radical groups operating in the region. In response, Pakistan has denied involvement in armed incidents and accused New Delhi of violating the rights of the Muslim population.

India has previously taken steps to limit Pakistan’s diplomatic presence. In 2016, following similar attacks in Kashmir, India expelled several diplomats, accusing them of espionage. In 2019, after revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, relations between the two countries significantly deteriorated.

Currently, it is unclear how many Pakistani nationals will be subject to the new expulsion requirement. However, Indian authorities emphasize that the measures will be enforced within the stated timeframe. Citizens who violate the directive may face administrative detention or deportation with a ban on re-entry.

Pakistan has not yet officially commented on India’s actions. A statement is expected soon after consultations with diplomats and national security agencies. SAARC representatives have not commented on the suspension of the visa-free system.

The diplomatic tension between India and Pakistan remains one of the longest-standing conflicts in South Asia. Both countries continue to claim the Kashmir region and maintain a military presence there. Despite periodic attempts to normalize dialogue, incidents along the Line of Control and mutual accusations continue to hinder stabilization.

India’s new decision is likely to be perceived in Pakistan as a hostile act. Analysts expect another round of tension, including potential retaliatory steps from Islamabad. Meanwhile, New Delhi emphasizes that the actions are solely aimed at protecting national security.
